Spirit Rider Gallery & Studio The artwork and life of artist Lisa Head Harbidge
This bowl is an example of the contrasts I feel in life that are expressed through my work. It is a constant balancing act. Unbridled artistic passion with the need to present that passion in some form, wether it is on canvas, or in functional forms.
These detailed pictures are from my "if Only" series of work. This body of works speaks to an inner yearning to paint from my soul. I've always longed to paint with passion (otherwise why paint at all) and while I struggle with the medium of oils and acylics, I have found that the technical restrictions of glass combing in a kiln at 1700 degrees does not allow excessive control. Thus my "brush strokes" within the kiln result in a one of a kind unique blending of colours and motions that pleases my soul. When these pieces of glass are done in the kiln they are often too irradic to display as is and are given life in the new forms I create with them. I believe there is a very important need for usable art in our society today. Mass production and import products devalue the culture and the value of our lives. By using hand made works of art everyday and surrounding ourselves with art,we feed our souls and we stay in touch with our authentic selves.
Combed pieces that are the features in these pieces are one of a kind making each piece unique.
These pieces are potmelts that I call "The Feather Studies" because they are patterned from the extrodinary natural feather patterns I have seen on my chickens. Nature is a beautiful, wonderous inspiration, and you just find it in the most unexpected places sometimes.
